Like most things in our home, our ceiling lights tend to collect dust as the months go on — almost always without us noticing. Unfortunately, ceiling light fixtures are not quite as easy to clean as our table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces or wall lights. If you’ve noticed your ceiling light fixtures are losing their natural glow, it’s time to give them a cleaning.
Below, our team members at The Light House Gallery provided some tips for successfully cleaning your ceiling light fixtures. Visit our showrooms in Springfield and Branson, Missouri today.
Put safety first.
Our number one concern when you decide to clean your ceiling lights is to put your safety first. If that means having a friend or family member hold your step stool, ladder or scissor lift, then so be it. You need a stable working surface in order to clean any ceiling lights, and the last thing we want is for you to fall and injure yourself. Do not try to clean high ceiling lights alone.
Gather the correct cleaning supplies.
Before you start going up and down your ladder to clean your ceiling light fixtures, gather all the necessary cleaning supplies you’ll need to make your ceiling lights look brand new. This will lessen your “up and down” time and will make the cleaning process a little simpler.
Here are some items you might want to keep at hand:
- Lint removing cloths
- Dusting sheets
- Water
- Compressed air
- All-purpose cleaner
- A flat head and Phillips head screwdriver
- Any replacement light bulbs (if necessary)
Turn the light fixture off.
Referring to our “Safety First” section above, please turn off any power that runs to the light fixture you are cleaning. Usually just turning off the switch will do this, but if you want to be extra careful, you can turn off the power at the breaker, too.
Remove any shades.
Take off any removable shades to prevent them from dropping or getting in your way. You can also clean the shades on the floor to minimize your time on a ladder.
Replace light bulbs, if necessary.
Since you’ll already be taking the time to get up high to clean your ceiling lights, take a moment to replace any light bulbs that need to be replaced. Light bulbs that are dimmer than others are nearing the end of their functionality, and you can knock out two birds with one stone by replacing the bulbs while you’re cleaning.
You can even switch to LED lights if that’s your preference.
