WHAT IS A STEP LIGHT?
Step lights are lights that go on or in staircases, walkways, or outdoor decks. They are primarily meant to serve the purpose of a night light and provide safety at night. Step lights consist of essentially a frame and a light bulb that are usually controlled by a switch.
TYPES OF STEP LIGHTS
- On the step. Step lighting can be installed on top of your steps. These can either be recessed lights within the riser (the name for the vertical portion of your step), or the tread (the name for the horizontal portion of your step). Tread lighting is a bit more dramatic, while riser lighting will usually illuminate the entire step. On the step lighting usually doesn’t affect the overall lighting in your room.
- Beside the step. These step lights are installed in or on the wall next to the steps. These types of lights do impact your room lighting, brightening it up. These step lights work by casting the light down onto the step. With more room to play with, beside the step lights allow you to fancy up your frames.
- Under the step. This type of step lights is great for a floating staircase with no riser. They can be installed either on the side of the steps or you can run a row of linear step light fixtures across the bottom or your steps, giving it a really cool, bright look.
All of the above types of step lights work well both as inside lighting or as outside lighting solutions. Step lights will not only add value to your home, but they can be used to add light, as decor, or simply for aesthetics. Of course, their purpose of safety applies in all situations.
