And when the days get shorter, the nights longer, and the wind blows its desolate call, you are grateful for indoor lighting to cook dinner by, to read a chapter before bed, and to see while you do your late-night laundry.

WHAT IS A WALL TORCHIERE?
If you look at the word, you’ll get a clue; do you see the word “torch”? If you do, then you’ve nailed this etymology challenge. Derived from the French word “torchere,” it’s original meaning was large, decorated candelabrum. Today, torchieres refer to a type of lighting. It’s a lamp (either a floor or a wall lamp) that directs light upwards. It is usually encased in a bowl. It’s a fancy name for a fancy light.
WHEN DO YOU USE A WALL TORCHIERE?
Wall torchieres are a type of diffused lighting, or accent lighting. They are usually not the primary means to light a room. Instead, wall torchieres set ambiance and mood and add additional lighting in dark corners where it may be needed.
TYPES OF WALL TORCHIERES
- Free-standing torchieres. Many torchieres are free-standing and serve as floor lamps. There are many types of torchieres, but all are distinguished by long tall stands and almost always an upward facing light, similar to a torch. You can go as elegant as you want for this type of floor lamp with many different types of styles, from rustic to modern.
- Wall torchieres. The Light House Gallery in Missouri features wall torchieres. These light fixtures are attached to the wall and serve more of an accent piece and a decorative purpose. Many wall torchieres are used in entryways for diffused light or in living rooms for perfect lighting for conversations.
